How to Create a Beautiful Torginol Pearlescent Garage Floor: A Step-by-Step Guide

• Pre-wetting the floor

• Applying a heavy-duty cleaner/degreaser

• Scrubbing with a stiff-bristled broom

• Pressure washing the entire surface

• Allowing the floor to dry completely

Since the garage had housed vehicles for two decades, removing contamination was critical to ensure proper bonding of the new coating system.

Step 3: Sand the Existing Epoxy

Glossy epoxy surfaces must be mechanically abraded to create a profile for the new coating.

A square vibrating floor sander was used to sand the floor in three directions:

1. Front to back

2. Side to side

3. Diagonally across the floor

This process removes the glossy sheen and creates the necessary surface texture for adhesion.

Pro Tip:

Don't rush this step. Proper sanding is one of the biggest factors in long-term coating success.

Step 4: Remove All Dust

Sanding creates a significant amount of epoxy dust that must be completely removed.

After sanding:

• The floor was pressure washed again

• Dust and residue were flushed out

• The floor was allowed to dry

• The surface was cleaned with acetone using a microfiber mop

Acetone helps remove any remaining contaminants and leaves a clean surface ready for primer.

Step 5: Apply an Epoxy Primer

The next step is applying a high-performance primer coat.

An EP55 epoxy primer was selected because it can bond to:

• Bare concrete

• Existing epoxy coatings

• Tile and other glossy surfaces

The primer provides excellent adhesion and creates the foundation for the metallic resinous system.

Application Tips

• Cut in edges and corners with chip brushes.

• Roll the field with 18-inch rollers.

• Work in manageable batches.

• Have a helper mixing material while another person applies it.

Most epoxy systems have a limited working time, so teamwork helps maintain a wet edge and consistent application.

Step 6: Fill Saw Cuts and Surface Imperfections

After the primer cures, address any joints, saw cuts, cracks, or surface defects.

The process included:

• Filling saw cuts with epoxy Cabasil filler

• Skimming material tight across the joints

• Allowing approximately 30 minutes for curing

• Squeegeeing and leveling the repairs

Repairing these areas now prevents imperfections from telegraphing through the pearlescent finish later.

Step 7: Prepare for the Torginol Pearlescent Floor

Before pouring the pearlescent coating, inspect the floor carefully.

Any:

• Dust nibs

• Outgassing bubbles

• Surface craters

• Divots

must be sanded smooth and repaired if necessary.

Additional preparation included:

• Re-masking perimeter edges with T-Rex tape

• Installing backer rod behind the tape to create a containment dam for the pearlescent epoxy

These details help create clean edges and proper coating thickness.

Step 8: Create Your Pearlescent Design

This is where the transformation happens.

For this project, three Torginol  metallic colors were blended to create a dramatic black metallic appearance with movement and depth throughout the floor.

The pearlescent resin was laid out in a diagonal pattern to create visual flow across the garage.

As you spread the material:

• Ensure complete coverage

• Blend colors strategically

• Create movement in the pattern

• Work quickly before the material begins to set

Step 9: Use Denatured Alcohol for Special Effects

One technique that adds incredible visual texture is lightly misting denatured alcohol onto the metallic epoxy.

By spraying selected areas:

• The alcohol creates a hammered-metal effect

• Metallic pigments separate and move

• Unique fish-eye patterns emerge

• Additional depth and dimension are created

For this project, the alcohol was focused primarily on the darker black areas to maximize visual contrast.

Less Is More

Use the alcohol sparingly. Small amounts can create dramatic effects without overwhelming the design.

Step 10: Repair Minor Imperfections

After the pearlescent layer cures, inspect the floor for any isolated defects.

In this project, a few small imperfections and one crater caused by debris migration were repaired by:

• Filling the defect

• Allowing it to cure

• Sanding it flush

• Applying a final topcoat over the repair area

These final touch-ups ensure a flawless showroom-quality appearance.

• Rich black, white, and grey pearlescent movement
